At present our college offers regular P.G.(Semester) courses in Zoology, Geography and Assamese with the following Special/optional papers in the 4th semester :

1. Zoology (i) Cell Biology (ii) Fish and Fishery Biology (iii) Entomology
2. Geography (i) Geography of Rural Development (ii) Fluvial Geomorphology
3. Assamese (i) Literature (Group-A) (ii) Language (Group-B)

Abstract of Semester System at P.G. Level under G.U.

One of the major academic reforms undertaken by Gauhati University since 2000-2001 has been the introduction of the Semester System at the Post Graduate level, and the continuous internal evaluation system. Syllabi of the Post Graduate courses have been revised from time to time incorporating many new innovative and contemporary subjects. The course curriculum has been designed toput emphasis on the overall development of the students with more stress on the development of the skills, positive attitude, good habit formation and value education. Moreover, the course curriculum is multi- and inter-disciplinary in approach, and has been designed, as far as possible in a modular form, so as to combine in a different way to offer programme flexibility, options to the students, and to help the departments so that they can slowly switch over to the creditbased system. The use of computers and modern teaching technology in the classroom instruction are available in almost all the Departments of the University.

The following guidelines set out various aspects relating to Evaluation under the Semester System.

Evaluation under the Semester System

1. A Post Graduate Course shall be of four Semesters covering two Calendar Years. The schedule for the Semester System shall be as per the Academic Calendar.

2. Students’ performance is monitored throughout the Semester by continuous assessment in the theory and practical courses. Evaluation of the students’ performance in each of the theory and practical paper will be based on
the following:
Internal Evaluation : 20 % Marks
External Evaluation : 80 % Marks

3. Internal evaluation should be based on two sessional examinations, home assignments, seminars and library work in each Semester.

4. External evaluation should be through a final examination at the end of the Semester.

5. The pass marks in each theory paper is 30% and that in each practical paper is 40%. However, in order to clear a Semester the student must get a combined aggregate of 45% marks in the subject in each Semester examination.
Students have to clear the back in one paper per Semester.

6. In each paper, students must secure pass marks in both the internal as well as the external evaluation separately.

7. A student who could not appear or failed in any Semester examination will be allowed to clear the same as follows:
(a) First Semester with the regular Third Semester examination.
(b) Second Semester with the regular Fourth Semester examination.

8. A student may be allowed to repeat any one of the theory papers in the First and Second Semester, and may be allowed for ‘betterment’ of marks in one paper in the
Third Semester, provided the student secures less than 55 % marks in that paper.

9. No ‘repeat’ / ‘betterment’ shall be allowed in the practical examinations in any Semester and also in any examination in the Fourth Semester.

10. In the Fourth Semester if a Project Work or Dissertation or Advanced Level Practical examination is evaluated and found to be satisfactory, the student need not ‘repeat’ the paper even if he/she fails in the Fourth Semester examination. In order to clear the semester he/she need only to reappear in the theory papers in the next chance.

11. A student who has not cleared any semester examination and also for students who have opted for ‘repeat’/ ‘betterment’, the Fourth Semester results will be withheld until all the back logs are cleared.

12. A student must pass all his Semester examinations, including ‘repeat’ and ‘betterment’ chances, within four years from the date of admission to the First Semester course. A student will get a maximum of three chances to clear a particular Semester.

13. In case of any dispute regarding evaluation or unforeseen events the matter may be placed in the Departmental Advisory Committee and Committee of Courses and
Studies (P.G.) for an amicable settlement.

14. Since the Semester System involves continuous assessment, there would be no scope for a student to appear as a private candidate in any subject.

15. Under the present Regulations for the Semester System, examination reforms are explicitly introduced. In order to implement these more effectively, the Departments are given academic and financial autonomy. Complete academic freedom is envisaged for the faculty members of each Department.

16. For any matter not covered under this Regulation for Semester System, the existing University Rules and the Gauhati University Act 1949 (as amended till date) should be applicable.


P.G. Department of Geography at a glance :

The Department of Geography, one of the premier post graduate departments of this college is about five decades old, imparting geographical knowledge to a wide ranging students right from P.G. level. At the initial stage, the department was headed by Prof. N. Prusty and within a short span of time, the department witnessed dedicated services from a number of degnifed faculties like Dr. T.K. Mathew (now late), Prof. J.K. Patra, Prof. R.D. Barman (now late), Prof. R. Patowari and Prof. D.N. Goswami. At present, the Dept. is headed by Dr. B. Talukdar (an alumni) and other ten faculty members including three non-teaching staff. The upgradation from intermediate to P.G. course in Geography was a natural process. The intermediate course (Arts and Science) was started in the year 2009, followed by B.A. (General) in 1957, B.Sc (General) in 1961, B.A./B.Sc (Honours) in 1971 and Post-Graduate course in 1982. Inspite of the limited infrastructure, the exemplary perseverance and team-spirit among students and the faculty have strengthened the academic web to achieve the desired goal of quality education. Since the scope and prospect of the subject is increasing day by day, so the college authority has provided under the special assistance of U.G.C. two GIS Computer Lab with Arc View 10.2 GIS software for the continuation of UG and PG practical assignments pertaining to the syllabus. This modern technological device will help the students as well as the faculty members. Among the other infrastructural facilities, the department has a well-equipped AC seminar hall with audio-visual facilities, a seminar library with more than 300 books and journals and a museum having all sorts of records. The faculty members of this department have completed numbers of minor and a major Research Project and also attended different workshops, seminars, orientation programs and refresher courses within and outside the state to cope with the academic challenges. During the period from 2003 to 2013, 37 numbers of students at UG and 66 number of students at P.G. level have secured first class from the department. At present, the UGC has recognised this department as a P.G. department. The Dept. organises seminars, workshops, scientific talks regularly for the benefit of the student and the faculty.


In order to meet the growing challenges of higher education in rural area, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Teachers Training College, Pathsala introduced P.G. programme in 1981 under the supervision of Dr. Kalinath Sarma, Ex-HOD, Zoology (now late), G.U. and under the dynamic leadership of Rajendra Nath Sarma, the then Prinicipal, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Teachers Training College (now late). Dr. B. P. Verma was the founder HOD. Initially two specializations were introduced namely (i) Cell and Molecular Biology and (ii) Fish Biology and Fishery Science. Subsequently, Entomology was also introduced, which is presently renamed as Insect Physiology.

The department has a well-equipped laboratory and also a spacious museum. The Zoology Museum is one of the largest and best museums of the state and students from different institutions of the locality use to visit the museum frequently. The Dept. has one seminar library which contains nearly 1000 books and journals along with internet connectivity. The dept. is at present headed by Mrs. S. Talukdar and ten faculties with three Ph.D degree holders and five M. Phil degree holders. The department is proud to announce that a research scholar, Niranjan Brahma obtained Ph.D. degree in 2009 by performing his work in the department itself under the able guidance of Dr. N. N. Sarma, the then HOD. Till date as many as many as 304 students have secured P.G. degree from this department out of which, 64 students have secured 1st Class. In the undergraduate level also, hundreds of students have obtained their graduation with 1st Class in Major Course. Most of the alumni are now engaged in various prestigious jobs in different parts of the country. The faculty members have completed a number of major and minor research projects and have attended Seminars and Workshops at National and International level. The department successfully carried out 3 Career Oriented courses like i) Industrial Fishery ii) Pest Control and Management and iii) Cutting and Tailoring etc. The department has now been recognized as P.G. Dept. by UGC. The Dept. regularly organises workshops, guest lectures, scientific talks etc.

P.G. Department of Assamese at a glance :

The Dept. of Assamese is one of the Premier Post-graduate depts of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Teachers Training College. At the initial stage, the dept. was headed by Prof. Uddhab Ch. Kalita. At present, the dept. is headed by Dr. B. Bora Dev Choudhury and other four permanent faculty members. P.G. course in Assamese was started in the year 2006. Inspite of limited infrastructure, the exemplory perseverance and team-spirit among students and faculty have strengthened the academic web to achieve the desired goal of quality education. The dept. has succeeded in producing a large number of brilliant students. During the period from 2006 to 2012 two students at UG and three students at P.G. level have secured first class from the dept. In 2009, Miss Hirumoni Kalita secured 1st class 1st position at P.G. level. The faculty members of the department are engaged in research work in different fields. They have attended different workshops, seminars, orientation programs and refresher courses etc. At present, the UGC has recognised this department as a P.G. Dept. The Dept. regularly organises seminers, guest lecturs etc.
